Model marketplaces and deployment options make it easier to build custom systems. At the same time, specialized healthcare products can be implemented faster. Neither path is automatically better.
What practices should take from this
Buy when a mature product fits the workflow, carries the necessary agreements and integrations, and has evidence you can verify. Build when the workflow is differentiating, existing products create excessive compromise, and the practice has a capable long-term owner.
Many practices will use a hybrid approach: purchase the clinical core and automate lower-risk handoffs around it. That can preserve support and validation while still addressing local friction.
Start with the workflow specification. A clear specification makes vendor comparison better and prevents custom development from becoming an open-ended experiment.
